How do I protect what is probably my single largest investment?
You have finally found the home of your dreams. Now how do I go about protecting my
investment?
Do I look for the lowest premium?
Lowest premium does not always mean best value. What are you buying with that premium? A.
A strong company which will not leave the State after incurring large storm losses. B. A
local agent which can assist you in determining the most appropriate coverages. C. A local
claims office which will be available when losses do occur.
How do I know if I am properly covered?
Take the time to review the proposal with the agent. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
Remember, this is your home. Are you insured at replacement cost? Are
your contents insured at replacement value? What happens when my sump pump stops or the
sewer backs up. What is my coverage for wind and hail damage? What about coverage for my
jewelry? Do I need anything additional for my computer?
Besides covering your home and your contents, did you know that your
homeowners also provides excellent coverage for personal liability?
Do I need additional liability coverage? Whats covered and whats not?
How can I get additional discounts on my homeowners policy?
Some companies give discounts for hail resistant roofs, deadbolt locks, fire
extinguishers, alarm systems, newer homes and if you also insure your automobiles with the
same company.
When buying a home, you have a lot of decisions to make. Dont just
get the cheapest price so you have coverage at the time of closing. Make sure your
investment is properly covered.
